Over the last couple of years, podcasts have slowly crept into mainstream media. Movies and TV shows are now more likely to reference or use podcasts as a major staple within their stories. For those of you that are an avid movie or TV show buff, chances are you've probably spotted this trend. So, here's a countdown of the top 10 movies about podcasts that are either based on or referenced.

10. Tusk

Not for the squeamish or faint-hearted, Tusk follows a brash and arrogant podcaster who gets more than he bargained for when he travels to Canada to interview a mysterious recluse that has a rather disturbing fondness for walruses.

If you like horror and drama (with a slice of comedy), then this might be for you. Just don't say we warned you about the ending!

9. Maron

Maron is loosely based on podcast WTF with Marc Maron, both of which were written and staring (you guessed it) Marc Maron.

The show follows a troubled Marc, who was an angry, drunk, self-involved, twice divorced compulsive mess for most of his adult life, but with the popularity of a podcast he does in his garage and a life of sobriety, his life and career are turning around.

8. Homecoming

Homecoming is based on Gimlet Media's psychological thriller podcast of the same name. It follows Heidi as she works at a facility helping soldiers transition into civilian life. Years later when the Department of Defense questions why she left, Heidi realizes there's a whole other story behind the one she's been telling herself.

7. Once Upon A Time

Once Upon a Time is about a young woman with a troubled past who is drawn to a small town in Maine where fairy tales are to be believed.

It doesn't actually mention podcasts within the show itself, but the creators ran a limited series talking about the show on the official Once Upon a Time podcast.

6. The Witching

The Witching is your typical horror jump scare movie, but it's made this list as it uses podcasts as a main staple of the plot.

In an attempt to improve their ratings, members of a popular podcast, The Witching Hour, share stories on the site where the Woodland Valley Witch was brutally murdered (queue suspenseful horror noises).

5. Scream (The TV Series)

Scream (not to be confused with the old 1990's movies), is a serialized anthology series that follows a group of teenagers being targeted by a masked serial killer. One of the characters, a podcaster called Piper Shaw, comes to Lakewood to investigate the recent murders in an attempt to find the next big thing for her show.

4. 2 Dope Queens

Based on the show of the same name, 2 Dope Queens translates the podcast format into a TV talk show. The series encompasses various topics about sex, romance, race, hair, living in New York, and Billy Joel.

As far as adaptations go from one medium to another, this is by far the best and truest to the original content.

3. Alex, Inc.

Based on Gimlet Media Inc.'s StartUp. Alex, Inc. follows Alex, who is in his mid-30s with a wife and two kids, makes the crazy decision to quit his good job and dive into the brave new world of starting a business.

Although it was cancelled just after 1 season, Alex, Inc. shows the potential for podcast to TV show adaptations.

2. Comedy Bang! Bang!

Comedy Bang! Bang! is a talk show parody that features celebrity guests, comedy sketches, animation, and a whole manner of whacky and zany mischief.

Just like 2 Dope Queens, this is a TV show that's based on a podcast of the same name and adapts the content rather faithfully.

1. Dirty John

Based on true crime podcast on the life of John Meehan, Dirty John follows Debra who falls for a handsome doctor. All isn't as it appears as she's pulled into a sinister game of psychological manipulation.

For those that like "on the edge of your seat" suspense, then this is right up your street (just don't come crying to us when your sanity snaps!).

That about wraps it up for this list of top 10 movies about podcasts. If you know of any others we've missed, from either movies or TV shows, then let us know in the comments below 👇👇👇
